Skype on your TV FAQs

  • How do I use Skype on a Blu-ray player?

First, you'll need to buy a Skype-ready Blu-ray player which comes with Skype pre-installed and ready to use. (Or you can get a TV with Skype built in). Secondly, you'll also need a fast broadband connection, and lastly, a compatible TV webcam that has a special microphone that easily picks up sound at a distance. This means you can enjoy Skype from the comfort of your couch. Blu-ray players and TV webcams are available in our accessories shop (or from select retail outlets)

  • What features does Skype on my Blu-ray player support?

The exact features may vary between manufacturers, but most products will support the following features:

    • Send and receive Skype-to-Skype voice and video calls
    • Call landlines and mobiles (Skype Credit required).
    • Retreive your Skype voicemail.
    • Participate in a voice conference call with up to 24 other people.
    • Some products also support HD video calling.
  • Can I make Skype-to-Skype calls on other devices such as computers and mobiles?

Yes, you can contact anyone on Skype regardless of the device they are using.

  • Can I receive incoming calls on my Blu-ray player?

Yes, if your TV is switched on you will see an incoming call notice on screen and then you can choose to answer the call or decline it.  Even if your TV is switched off you can set the Blu-ray player to automatically keep Skype running when it is in standby. Some players have a visual LED display showing the name of contact who is calling.

  • Do I also need a TV webcam to make voice calls?

Yes, the Blu-ray players running Skype don't have built-in microphones, so you'll need the specially-designed webcam with its integrated microphone so your friends can hear you.
